Privacy policy for The Hanon Method.

Effective April 13, 2026. This policy explains what information the product handles, why it is handled, and how account-linked and device-local data are managed.

Who this policy covers

This policy applies to The Hanon Method iPhone and iPad app, the public website at thehanonmethod.com, and related operational support channels. In this policy, “The Hanon Method,” “we,” and “our” mean the operator of this product and website.

Summary

Practice history is stored on device by default. If account and sync features are enabled in your build, selected account and practice data may also be processed by the configured backend so your progress can persist across reinstalls or devices.

Information we may collect

  1. Account information, such as email address, sign-in credentials, and optional display name.
  2. Practice records, including exercise identity, timing events, scoring outputs, mastery state, stability history, and related progress analytics.
  3. App state and settings, such as recent exercise context, selected MIDI source, sync state, and local preferences needed to restore your workflow.
  4. Optional profile images if you choose to import one from the camera or photo library.
  5. Support communications and operational details you send when contacting support or privacy inboxes.

How we use information

  1. To provide the measured practice workflow, local persistence, and optional account continuity features.
  2. To authenticate users, restore sessions, and support optional sync across devices or reinstalls.
  3. To diagnose failures, respond to support requests, and maintain service reliability and security.
  4. To operate the website, legal pages, support channels, and release-review materials tied to the app.
  5. To comply with legal obligations and enforce product terms where required.

Legal bases and business purposes

Where applicable law requires a legal basis, we process information to provide the product you request, to maintain a secure and reliable service, to communicate with you about your account or support issue, with your consent for optional permissions such as camera or photo library access, and to satisfy legal obligations. Where laws such as CCPA or similar frameworks apply, these activities are also the business purposes for which information is used.

Permissions and device access

  1. Bluetooth is used to connect to MIDI hardware for measured practice capture.
  2. Camera access is used only if you choose to capture a profile image.
  3. Photo library access is used only if you choose to select a profile image.
  4. The app does not require an online account to browse the core exercise structure.

How information is stored and shared

  1. Local practice history and app preferences are stored on your device.
  2. Passwords are not stored in plain text.
  3. When sync is enabled, authenticated account and practice records may be stored in the configured backend.
  4. We may use service providers to operate hosting, support, authentication, sync, and app distribution functions. Based on the current implementation, those providers may include Apple for app distribution and device platform services, and Supabase for optional authentication and synced data handling.
  5. We do not sell personal information.

Retention

  1. Local data remains on your device until you remove the app or the app later provides a local reset path.
  2. Remote account data is retained for as long as the synced account remains active, unless earlier deletion is requested or required by law.
  3. Deletion requests are processed promptly. Operational logs, backups, and security records may persist for a limited period where reasonably necessary for fraud prevention, recovery, or legal compliance.

Your rights and choices

  1. You can decline optional permissions such as camera or photo library access.
  2. You can use the app in a local-only mode when remote configuration is not required for the feature you want.
  3. If your build supports sync, you can request account deletion from inside the app or by following the public deletion instructions.
  4. You may contact us to request access, correction, deletion, or additional privacy information, subject to applicable law and verification requirements.

Children’s privacy

The Hanon Method is designed for disciplined students, adult learners, teachers, and serious pianists. It is not designed as a child-directed service, and we do not knowingly solicit personal information from children in a child-targeted context.

International transfers

If you access the service from outside the country where the operator or service providers are located, your information may be processed in other jurisdictions. Where required, we rely on contractual, organizational, or technical safeguards that are reasonable for the service configuration in use.

Policy changes

We may update this policy to reflect product, operational, or legal changes. The effective date at the top of the page will be updated when material changes are published.
